February Senate Scene Article

Nothing new to report from south of the border. Communications have dropped off dramatically after a flurry of messages about attending San Antonio. No one showed and no subsequent mail.

Translation for ASAC continues to be busy. Marita is cramming for upcoming international meetings and it feels good to be able to help her by putting some of their proposals into English so that the Europeans, among others will have benefit of their input.

October Senate Scene Article

In July a number of US Senators including President Joe A. and first lady Margaret Souza attended a Jaycee and Senate Regional Convention in Ensenada, BC, Mexico.
Thank you Vice President, John Riggs, Doug Meyers, Susie Irvine, Javier Ruelas, California Senate President Vince Salinas and especially Joe A. & Margaret for making the effort to travel to Mexico. Your attendance was really appreciated by the hosts and it was wonderful to meet with their Jaycee and Senate Presidents and partake of their warm hospitality.
Next month the National Convention of the Mexican Senate will take place in Puebla October 14 thru 17. If you are thinking about going and need any information or assistance please let me know.
Recent activities have included acting as a translator for the Secretary of the ASAC, Joaquin Martinez as well as for ASAC President, Marita Gonzales. Their constituency includes many English speaking Senators and both of them are more comfortable in Spanish. I am happy to be of service.
At this point there are no lost badges to be returned, no slide shows are in the offing however if anyone has any ideas akin to what COB John Price put me up to in Charleston, let me know. I’m game!

July Mentors Article

On July 9, a group of US “gringo” Senators traveled to Ensenada Mexico to attend Mexico’s Area 1 annual meeting of Senators and Jaycees. Among the attendees from Mexico were the Senate President, Francisco Rojas, the area 1 Vice President, Rosario Abrica, and ASAC Secretary, Joaquin Martinez. The meeting was dedicated to a long time local Jaycee and Senator, Raul Fernandez Herrera.

Beginning on Friday afternoon, right through Saturday evening (Monday morning for some of us) the liquid libations, food and especially the warm hospitality was provided in generous portions. Opening ceremonies at 8 AM, which included a drum and bugle corps from the Mexican Navy, will awaken anyone, regardless of the amount of cerveza consumed or the lack of sleep.

The US Senate was represented by President Joe A. “El Jefe” Souza, Margaret “Mago” Souza, Chief of Staff Doug “Chuy” Meyers, Region X Vice President John “Juanito” Riggs, California State Senate President Vince “Chente” Salinas, Region X Foundation Fundraiser Susie “La Guera” Irvine, Xavier “Javi” Ruelas and your ambassador Art “Turi -Viva” Shane.

The event ended with a Hawaiian style dinner dance, including a live band and lots of dancing. Due to the attendance of a feminine Jaycee chapter from Tecate, there were plenty of dancing partners.

Thank you, everyone who attended, especially Joe A. and Margaret and John Riggs who are doing lots of traveling this year, Francisco and Joaquin, also very busy officers of their Senate organizations and especially to Jaime Landavazo and his dedicated group of Dolphins who put the entire meeting together.
